Future Prediction

Happy Canyon AVA

When will Happy Canyon become the next Santa Barbara appellation?

What point is the question?

There are many well established Winemakers who already recognize this unique region currently part of the Santa Ynez Valley. Not only this but the climate, the soil conditions and the configuration has something not found in the rest of the Valley. Situated in the eastern part of the Santa Ynez Valley and Hwy 154, this is going to be the place to watch out for in upcoming vintages. Jeff Newton of Coastal Vineyard Care has brought about some of the most interesting changes in vineyard management, notably at the Vogelzang vineyard by aiming for higher density plantings, yet still allowing yields of around fourteen clusters per vine. A browse through the current releases will show how many Winemakers are already giving lip-service to the quality of the fruit from Happy Canyon.

With this in mind, many in the region mostly refer to the area as Westerly ( even though it is east of everything ). The question then arises to the naming of this appellation. Should it be known as Happy Canyon, Westerly, Cachuma ( due to the close proximity of Lake Cachuma ), or will there be something new and unknown to appease other parties such as the local Chumash Native Americans?

Not only does the naming play a small part in the thinking, but also when? Santa Rita Hills AVA was only awarded a few years back which means a new subdivision may be seen as too soon. Most are predicting that it will happen within the next five years. If you have any thoughts on this AVA-in-waiting let us know. We will have a poll going with all the submitted preditions.
